History

The history of the Colorado Front Range is entwined with that of the Golden Gate Canyon. The Ute and Arapaho tribes inhabited the area long before European settlers arrived, leaving their mark on the cultural landscape of the land.

A boom in gold mining activity in the middle of the 19th century shaped the history of the area and drew settlers to Golden, which was nearby. During this time, exploration and possible mining activities within the canyon may have occurred.

During the 20th century, as mining declined, attention shifted to recreation and conservation. Golden Gate Canyon State Park was created in 1960 to protect the region’s natural beauty and give people access to outdoor activities. Golden Gate Canyon is still a highly valued natural resource today, drawing tourists and locals who love adventure and a close relationship with the natural world.
